Missionaries God Against the Indians
Published in Paperback by Pan Books Ltd ()
Average review score:

LORD SAVE US FROM PROSELYTIZING US MISSIONARIESThis book reveals the scandalous abuse of indigenous tribes from all over the world but especially South American. It leads one to believe that all US non-conforming off-the-wall religious sects should be banned from all foreign travel. I thought that such barbarity in the name of religious conversion had ended centuries ago. This book should be serialised in a broadsheet newspaper of repute so that it can be brought to general attention the criminality of the US missionaries. All South American governments should prohibit their activity and put an end to their preying on innocent people of the world

The Moonbow of Mr. B. Bones
Published in Library Binding by Knopf (February, 1992)
Average review score:

a book for young and oldThis children's book is a beautifully crafted and illustrated book that teaches lessons about honesty, friendship, and loyalty. The story takes place in "The Gap" where a new kid in town destroys the reputation of an old man's traveling business (he sells magic potions, beeswax, balls of string, and wooden spoons). The man redeems his reputation (but never returns to The Gap) when he creates a Moonbow above the town river by pouring his last bottle of Moonbows at the base of a waterfall on his way out of town. The new kid realizes his mistake, and the end of the book notes that Moonbows are real occurences in Cumberland Falls, KY--people from far and wide still come to see them.

More Annotated Alice: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass
Published in Hardcover by Random House (November, 1990)
Average review score:

Martin Gardner's Annotated Alice is definitive.Martin Gardner avoids questionable psychoanalyticinterpretations, and instead describes the objects ofCarroll's satire that have been forgotten since the Victorian era. His notes allow us to fully enjoy Lewis Carroll's humor, and to see why Alice was so loved by children then (and by mathematicians now).

The Mother of Us All: A History of Queen Nanny, Leader of the Windward Jamaican Maroons
Published in Hardcover by Africa World Press (July, 2000)
Average review score:

The Mother of Us All. A History of Queen NannyThis is a small book, 119 pages, that cuts a big swath. It is about an interesting period and a lively woman of the early 18th Century, someone who never made it into any of my history books. I certainly know about her now. Gottlieb pulls together threads from many sources into one rich fabric. This is a progressive book about colonialism, racism, feminism, about military srategy, about the West-African-rooted religious traditions and the use of supernatural powers that made their way into the Maroon Culture. Gottlieb obviously has great respect for her subject -- this remarkable woman, Nanny, part historical figure, part legend -- who represents a courageous struggle against oppression. The book is well-researched, illustrated, and spirited reading. Some of the historical documents can be bypassed if not interested. One is impressed with its relevance to the very same "isms" that continue to torment us in the 21st century.

Mother's First Year: A Realistic Guide to the Changes and Challenges of Motherhood
Published in Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (February, 1997)
Average review score:

An excellent read for first time mums!I picked this book up at my local library while pregnant with my first baby, and now can't wait to get a copy for myself! Cynthia Copeland Lewis' writing style is very clear and direct, making it an enjoyable and easy read. The information inside is very to-the-point for first time mothers, especially if you're afraid or unsure of how life will change once that baby comes into your life.
What really sets this book apart from so many others I've read is that it's focus is not on the baby, but rather on YOU, the new mother. Ms. Lewis writes with great sincerity and understanding about how your life will change, about your relationships with others, including your husband. I definitely recommend this as a must-read, or as a great gift for an expectant mum!!!

Mothers' Miracles: Magical True Stories of Maternal Love and Courage
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (April, 1999)
Average review score:

Fabulous, touching and emotionalThis is one of the most touching and emotional books I have read in a long time. I was at the library and they had a display set up for Mother's Day, and this book caught my eye. The stories are quite short so you can read a few at a time if you are time-crunched. I plan on buying several copies and giving them as gifts to some of my friends who, like me, have devoted themselves to our children. I was extremely touched by the book, and I cried openly at many of the stories.
"Miracles" is a wonderful book for anyone who enjoys the poet voice. It should ALWAYS be in print. Children need to know and have such examples of their own muse. And adults need to listen and be reminded of their own.
